One review I read of them said they sound like Clap Your Hands Say Yeah, but I'd put them closer to Spoon than I would CYHSY. They describe themselves writing ADD fueled pop songs. Either way, definitely worth checking out. Recommended tracks: Oxford, Sliding Doors
Peel MySpace
Stream the Album for Free
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://bp0.blogger.com/_rdAIR4TI6JE/RiJZxR_TLBI/AAAAAAAAAE0/8gqwfEk61sg/s400/lot_1.gif" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5053700435040480274" />
The next band of note is Land of Talk. Here is Part 2 - Sufjan Stevens:
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://bp0.blogger.com/_rdAIR4TI6JE/RhlU0JvVL6I/AAAAAAAAAEU/2pV6y5HTEvo/s400/DSCF4251.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5051161712017092514" />
Sufjan was the closing act at the 2007 Music Now Festival, curated by Bryce Dessner of The National and Clogs. After an interesting set by Czech avant-garde duo Irena and Vojtech Havel, Sufjan came on with string quartet, french horn and oboe players, Dessner on guitar, and Shara Worden (aka My Brightest Diamond) on vocals and various instruments. After a "world premire" song about Pluto, Sufjan played stripped down, but equally beautiful versions of tracks mostly off of his last three albums, Michigan, Seven Swans, and Illinois! It was an utterly beautiful show. Standout songs included "Casimir Pulaski Day," "John Wayne Gacy Jr.," and "Seven Swans." After the set was done, Sufjan reluctantly came out and played a stunning accoustic version of "To Be Alone With You" that I'm pretty sure made the girl in front of me cry.
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://bp1.blogger.com/_rdAIR4TI6JE/RhlVEZvVL7I/AAAAAAAAAEc/ASWjj_6N2ss/s400/DSCF4247.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5051161991189966770" />
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://bp2.blogger.com/_rdAIR4TI6JE/RhlVMpvVL8I/AAAAAAAAAEk/55ybTQBoDIQ/s400/DSCF4254.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5051162132923887554" />
It was a really terrific music weekend overall.
P.S. Anyways, as previously mentioned, my WDUB cohort Jon G and are in the midst of seeing both the Long Winters and Sufjan Stevens this weekend in Cincinnati. Here is Part 1- The Long Winters:
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://bp0.blogger.com/_rdAIR4TI6JE/RhezspvVL2I/AAAAAAAAAD0/7XuY0iCGXP0/s400/DSCF4207.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5050703086819290978" />
Last night couldn't have been more perfect. We showed up a little late, but the Southgate House in Newport, KY (ac cross the river from Cinnci) was empty, so we secured a couple spots right up at the stage. After a couple terrific sets from The Broken West and Say Hi To Your Mom, John Roderick and his band took the stage. Even with the drunken hecklers telling him to "take it all off," Roderick wasn't fazed and put on a tremendous show complete with songs off of each of this bands two full lengths and EP as well as a cover of The Beastie Boys "Fight For Your Right to Party" and even a song by Chicago.
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://bp1.blogger.com/_rdAIR4TI6JE/Rhe0E5vVL3I/AAAAAAAAAD8/HOc6UUd1zfI/s400/DSCF4212.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5050703503431118706" />
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://bp0.blogger.com/_rdAIR4TI6JE/Rhe0cpvVL4I/AAAAAAAAAEE/BJoEiWW3e2E/s400/DSCF4222.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5050703911453011842" />
The coolest thing about Long Winters shows if you've never seen one is that they have no setlist. John takes requests from the crowd as well as from the band. He took both suggestions that Jon ("Rich Wife") and I (Ultimatum...the slow version) suggested, probably because we were so close. After the show, John Roderick stood in the back near the bar signing autographs and taking pictures. He sure lives up to his reputation as being one of indie rock's really good guys.
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://bp0.blogger.com/_rdAIR4TI6JE/Rhe0xpvVL5I/AAAAAAAAAEM/yEi5Hugjvkc/s400/IMG_0025.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5050704272230264722" />
Tonight is Sufjan, which I'm insanely excited for. What they got was a pretty rousing show from a band that seemed to be heading into the same drunken stupor. Tearing through about 45 minutes to an hours' worth of two minutes songs, my immediate comparison was if the Mountain Goats' John Darnielle was in punk band. Overall a really terrific set.
The Thermals - No Culture Icons
The Thermals - Pillar of Salt

When the Hold Steady swaggered onto the stage (complete with two six packs of Bud and half a bottle of Jim Bean), the crowd went absolutely nuts. I mean like way beyond the normal "Whoo! The band I paid $17 to see is here" type of crazy. Launching into "Stuck Between Stations," Craig Finn and the gang displayed why they hold the title of "the greatest bar band" in indie rock as they covered all the big songs from "Boys and Girls in America" and "Separation Sunday" and even played a few from "The Hold Steady Almost Killed Me." Finn (with a brand new beard) prophesied at the mic like a lunatic and shared his abysmal luck with college basketball, making the large crowd seem like 12 guys in a bar at 2 in the morning. This show will stand out for me as one of the best true rock shows I've ever seen.
The Hold Steady - Your Little Hoodrat Friend

(All Pictures by Pat Hunt. My worry about the album was that they wouldn't be able to make another record as stunning as "Funeral," but after a few listens to "Neon Bible," I've discovered that's far from the truth. Evident throughout the whole album is the sort of Bruce Springsteen sound that has been popping up lately in indie rock (see: The Hold Steady's "Boys and Girls in America"). Win Butler fills his songs with more lyrics this time around, and tracks like "Keep the Car Running" and "(Antichrist Television Blues)" sound like The Boss with strings and a hurdy gurdy backing him. The album still retains the unique Arcade Fire sound which makes it stand out from being just another record. In my book, "Neon Bible" is just as good if not better (I need a few more listens) than "Funeral."
RECCOMENDED TRACKS: "Keep the Car Running", "The Well and the Lighthouse", "(Antichrist Television Blues"
The Arcade Fire - Black Mirror

What Light

Wilco has released a track from "Sky Blue Sky" for those of you who missed the stream. Here are my comments on each track from Jeff Tweedy and Co., with a little help from my brother Andrew and roommate Jon G:

1. Either Way - With a beautiful piano line matched with electric guitar fingering, this soft rock ballad took all of us by surprise with its beauty.
2. You Are My Face - This one starts with the sound of "Being There", but breaks down into a face melting solo reminiscent of "A Ghost is Born." The song has a definite late-70's sound do it, in only a way Wilco can produce. It sounds like where they were going after "Summerteeth" had they not made their groundbreaking album "Yankee Hotel Foxtrot."
3. Impossible Germany - This was by far the most anticipated track for me leading up to the release of the album. When they played it at Lollapalooza, it blew me away. Hearing a studio version, the song is even more powerful, with dueling guitar lines and spine tingling solos from Tweedy and Nels Cline. It sounds a lot like the sounds the band was producing on tracks on "A Ghost is Born" like "At Least That's What You Said" and "Hell is Chrome."
4. Sky Blue Sky - A lazy country waltz, it sounds like it'd fit perfectly on "Being There" with "Far Far Away." The more we listen to this, the more we hear a blending of all the sounds Wilco has used during their 12 years in the biz.
5. Side With The Seeds - Immediately, I am reminded of The Rolling Stone's "Time is On My Side." This again sounds like the perfect country-soul song you might here on a Sunday afternoon in the summer. But just when you are pulled into the soft organ and swell of Tweedy's voice, they break it down into pulsating guitars and piano before again quieting back down and again rising up. Cline has definitely shaped this band, taking away the computer noises heard on YHF and turning them into shredding solos.
6. Shake It Off - As I hear the start of this song, for some reason I imagine someone meandering down a street at 2 in the morning. As it builds, they start to rock a little bit, Tweedy sounds like he himself is shaking off his demons.
7. Please Be Patient - If you go see a Jeff Tweedy show, you will no doubt hear this song. It's a soft number with an accoustic guitar that might not get much play at full band shows, but its soft beauty makes it stand out instantly.
8. I Hate It Here - I could swear this is Wilo's soul album. But just as I get that idea, the song sounds like the Beatles' track "Oh Darlin!" then changes back to a very soulful sound. This song has an incredible yearning that with the guitar sounds like the song's protagonist has internal conflict that is still unresolved.
9. Leave Me (Like You Found Me) - Keeping with the laid back sound of the album, I have a feeling this will be my new anthem for late nights.
10. Walken - This song is positively wonderful. A happy little ditty that grows on my everytime I listen to it. Being an uber nerd, I'm also in the official chat room for the stream, there seems to be an anti-Nels Cline faction that don't like the guitar mastery he brings to the table, and I suppose this song is one that will help you decide which side of the fence you're on.
11. What Light - Bound to be a sing along at shows, it's reminscint of any uplifting 70's soul/rock song.
12. On and On and On - The closer starts off with a really terrific guitar-piano duel. Definately a love ballad, every couple who have to move apart will make this song theirs.

OVERALL IMPRESSION: wow.

Living With the Living

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://bp3.blogger.com/_rdAIR4TI6JE/RecVycOBg9I/AAAAAAAAACo/kiYMrmWcf4Q/s320/397-1.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5037018664549843922" />
As previously mentioned, Ted Leo + Pharmacists have a new album, "Living With the Living" coming out March 20. We got a copy of it at the station on Tuesday and after a few listens, I can honestly say it's their most ambitious album yet. Elements of "The Tyranny of Distance" and "Hearts of Oak" can be heard with in the music, and "Shake the Sheets" is heard most clearly in the political messages of the songs. But "Living With the Living" sets itself apart from those three. Though some of the songs are "traditional" Ted Leo tracks, several of them have more edge and even more backbone. The standout track is by far "The Lost Brigade" which is the biggest departure from Ted's previous sound. All in all, another terrific album from this group.
Ted Leo + Pharmacists - Sons of Cain [HIGHLY RECOMMENDED]
Ted Leo + Pharmacists - Bomb. I love getting first dibs on upcomming music every week. This week, I'm insanely excited to get Andrew Bird's new album, "Armchair Apocrypha." I'm excited not only because Bird is one of my personal favorites, but because the album dosn't come out until March 20. After listening to it, I can tell you its the most stunning album I've heard so far this year. Working with Martin Dosh and Haley Bonar, this album builds on his previous masterpiece "...And the Mysterious Production of Eggs." If you buy one album in March that's not the Arcade Fire, make it this one.
Andrew Bird - Heretics
Andrew Bird - Simple X

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://bp3.blogger.com/_rdAIR4TI6JE/RdpAwHqnDtI/AAAAAAAAAB0/WHc-74gCLqM/s320/br.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5033406728975617746" />
Blonde Redhead have a new album comming out soon as well. If you havn't heard already, I'm very excited to announce that Kill Rock Stars will be releasing a collection of unreleased Elliott Smith tracks on May 8. Titled "New Moon," the album is comprised of unreleased tracks Elliott recorded during his time with the label, when he made "Elliott Smith" and "Either/Or." As a big fan of Elliott's I've heard a lot of the 24 tracks featured on this two-disc collection. Though most of the tracks have been taken down for KRS, check out The Elliott Smith B-Sides site for, well, B-sides and demos.

Must Contain Self

Jenny Lewis. The band is called Brown Recluse Sings from Philly, and the song is a fantastic track off their Black Sunday EP called "Western Meadowlark." Listening to the EP, I hear the sound of Belle of Sebastian all over the place. It's pretty sweet. Be sure to check out their MySpace and get their EP (it's only $6!)
Brown Recluse Sings - Western Meadowlark
Brown Recluse Sings MySpace

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://bp2.blogger.com/_rdAIR4TI6JE/RdHuBITrIOI/AAAAAAAAABQ/SIEv7oBW9Fs/s320/DSCF3786.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5031063961926836450" />
One of my favorite artists over the last few years, Andrew Bird, is comming out with a new album on March 20. The album leaked online, so the record company let this track stay up to hype it up. It's gotten heavy rotation on my iTunes and radio show. If the album is half as good as the song, I'll be in heaven.
Andrew Bird - Heretics

Don't forget to listen to the show, Friday nights, 11:30-2. Also, check out the New Music Show I do with my roommate Jon where all we do is play the new music of the week. That's Monday afternoons, 3:30-5:30. Both can be streamed HERE I'm gonna get better at this blogging thing. To celebrate, here's a clip from last season.

Oh Yeah! I'd seen BSS a few times before (including with the whole band at Lollapalooza) but this show was exceptionally good. Bandmates/openers Do Make Say Think opened up with solid set (imagnine BSS without lyrics). Opening with "Lover's Spit," the band looked like they were set to take over Cleveland. Kevin Drew stopped the set briefly in the middle of "7/4 (Shorelines)" to break up an apparent fight in the audience, saying "That's not what our music is about!" I was a little disappointed that Lisa Lobsinger was there in place of Feist, Amy Milan, or Emily Haines, but she still made "Anthems for a Seventeen Year Old Girl" sound great (Kevin Drew quieted the crowd before hand saying "Let's stop the Bar Mitzvah for a second and pretend we're in an opium den."). One of the highlights for me was having guitarist Jason Collett come out and play one of his solo songs, "I'll Bring the Sun" with the band. They closed with "It's All Gonna Break," but came back to play "KC Accidental" before heading off the stage. A show this great makes me sad they're going on hiatus. I took a video of "Anthems" that I'm attempting to put on YouTube, so I'll get that up hopefully soon.

Ted Leo/RX with Death Cab for Cutie tonight. I'm extremely hyped. As a gift to you, here is a video of DCFC on Halloween as Devo.

Concert Review: Joanna Newsom

I kicked off my string of four amazing concerts last night with Joanna Newsom at Little Brother's in Columbus. Walking in and seeing the harp on the stage was enough for me to get excited. She opened with an incredible performance of "Bridges and Ballons" (my favorite of hers) and then brought out her band to play her new album "Ys" in its entirty. The new songs (5, which make up an hour of music) sound terrific, and I highly reccomend the album when it is released. One of the things that surprised me was her voice. If you've ever heard a Joanna Newsom song, you know what I'm talking about. It's like a cat being thrown against a wall. But live, her voice was much softer, and aside from a few squaks, quite beautiful. I've never seen a crowd go that crazy at a folk concert before. She came back out and played "Sadie" before being rushed out the door by her band.
Joanna Newsom MySpace

Tonight is concert #2: Broken Social Scene w/ Do Make Say Think

I Will Write You Love Letters if You Tell Me To

I heard about the Envy Corps about 2 years ago when I got "The Gregory Rumes EP" for free from their website. I started listening to it again, which lead me to purchase their latest EP, "I Will Write You Love Letters if You Tell Me To." I hear a lot of really cool things going on in their music. There's a definate Radiohead/Coldplay influence going on, but they seem to make it their own, which makes their sound unique. I very highly suggest buying the 7 track EP, if only for the tracks "Rhinemadiens" and "Party Dress."
Check out their MySpace page.

Sorry for missing the show Monday. I was at a great performance in Columbus of the Accoustic Africa Tour which featured 3 terrific African artists. I reluctantly went for my world music class and ended up loving it. It was a great way to kick off my amazing string of concerts. Tommorow night is Joanna Newsom, Friday is Broken Social Scene, Monday is Ted Leo/Pharmacists with Death Cab for Cutie, and 10 days later is My Morning Jacket! Phew! Stay tuned for pictures and reviews!

It's Sexy Time!

I'm SO excited to see Borat: Cultural Learnings of America for Make Benefit Glorious Nation of Kazakhstan in about an hour. Sure, sure, they've been super hyped all over the blogs and what not, but they definately deserve all the press. According to their website, it's going to be a while before their debut lp is ready to go, but in the meantime, tuesday sees the release of their new single "Your Biggest Fan." Featuring three new tracks, it seems quite promising. "Trouble" is one of the tracks that they have up on their website. Thats below, along with a track off of their other two EPs.
Voxtrot - Trouble
Voxtrot - Mothers, Sisters, Daughters & Wives
Voxtrot - The Start Of Something
Voxtrot's Website

Saturday YouTube Pick

I love both versions of the Office. This is easily one of the best shows I've ever seen. They had a ton of energy and the crowd fed on that and had just as much. They played a lot off "The Meadowlands" including "This Boy is Exhausted," "Everyone Choose Sides," "Hopeless," "Happy," crowd favorite "Boys You Won't" and closed with the beautiful "She Sends Kisses." The coolest part of their interaction after the show, when they came into the crowd, shaking hands and signing autographs for all who asked. This really reinforced my belief that they're one of the better bands out there.

--> I'm seeing Broken Social Scene in November in Cleveland. They have a new music video for "Major Label Debut (Fast)" which is a collage of footage from various tours, including a clip from their performance at the 2005 Intonation Festival. The picture above is from when I saw them at the 2005 Intonation Festival. I'll have a review and pictures hopefully by Monday at the latest.

My friends and I have (illegally) been several times to this abandoned mental institute in Indy called Central State. There is now a documentary about it. Check it out here. I've decided to start a new feature on this site, where I do capsule reviews of albums, old and new. Here is the first one:

The Hold Steady - Boys and Girls in America
The Hold Steady grabbed my attention with the song "You're Little Hoodrat Friend" on 2004's "Separation Sunday" and I never looked back. After seeing them at the 2005 Intonation Festival and Lollapalooza this past summer, I knew the Hold Steady were ready to take the indie music scene and make it make them a sandwhich. From the first notes, this album feels like what Bruce Springsteen and the E-Street Band would have made if they met a year ago. Craig Finn's stories of one night stands, getting high and betting on horses make "Boys and Girls in America" one of my favorite albums of this year. The standout track is the single, "Chips Ahoy!" where Finn begs "How I'm gonna know if you're high if you won't let me touch you?" while the band barrels through what sounds like Springsteen on steroids. Also reccomended: "Stuck Between Stations", "Massive Nights"
Stream the Album Here

Thanks to everyone who continues to listen to the show. I'm back! yep, the year is starting again, so FTBOTH is back and better than ever! Tonight is the scheduling for WDUB, so I will soon know when I'll be rockin the airwaves. As for now, I thought I'd go ahead and list the best shows I saw over the summer. Why? Not to show off...well ok, not only to show off. But mostly because this year's first broadcast will feature some tracks from these shows, including NEW SONGS FROM BRIGHT EYES, WILCO AND RADIOHEAD! That's right! New songs! Anyways, more to come when I have substantial news, but here's a list for now:
-Ben Folds
-Bright Eyes
-Death Cab for Cutie (#1)
-My Morning Jacket (#1)
-Clap Your Hands Say Yeah
-Beck
-RADIOHEAD
-Andrew Bird (Accoustic)
-The Streets
-Matisyahu
-The Mountain Goats
-The National
-The Walkmen
-Jens Lenkman
-Aseop Rock
-Stars
-The Raconteurs
-Sleater-Kinney
-Death Cab (#2)
-Nada Surf
-Feist
-Flaming Lips (#1)
-New Pornographers
-Kanye West
-Andrew Bird (With Martin Dosh)
-WILCO
-Broken Social Scene (Full Lineup)
-Flaming Lips (#2)

You guys will hear more soon!

It's Summertime

Hey folks, I don't know how many people read this, but I just thought I'd give a nice little pre-Bonnaroo summer time post. Today I checked out Luna Music's Sidewalk sale and got some great stuff, each for a dollar. I found albums by Arco, Jim Guthrie, Skating Club, Andrew Morgan, Living Things, Colin Clary and the Magogs, The Sun, and Built By Alaska all for a dollar a peice. Making things even better, I found singles for Athlete's "Half Light" and the Rock N Roll Soldiers "Anthem" (edited so I can play it on the show) and a World Leader Pretend EP. The two jems of the buy however were easily the soundtrack to the "Aristocrats" which has Gilbert Godfried, Sarah Silverman and Bob Saget (all three the best in the film) and a disc which I originally thought was a Bright Eyes single, but turned out to be "I'm Wide Awake It's Morning." All for a dollar! How wonderful! Other albums I've been groovin' to in the early part of the summer here have been (with my review):
-Gnarls Barkley- "St. Elsewhere" (5 stars)
-The Streets- "The Hardest Way to Make an Easy Living" (3.5 stars)
-The Walkmen- "A Hundred Miles Off" (4 stars)
-The Raconteurs- "Broken Boy Soldiers" (4 stars)
-Josh Ritter- "The Animal Years" (3 stars)
-Beirut- "Gulag Orkestar" (4 stars)

I'll have more to post after Bonnaroo, including word on new Radiohead tracks...

5-3-06 Show Playlist (5:30-7:30)

Here's the Playlist:
1. It'll be hilarious! Also, keep an eye out for press on Granville Calling (those are promo pics above). There is now a Facebook group and event. It's gonna be a really great show, hopefully with prizes (like pizza) and tons of games, and of course, great music. Remember, that is on Friday, May 5-Saturday May 6 from 6pm to 6pm. In a more random note, I highly recomend Islands' Return to the Sea, Yo La Tengo's amazing album I Can Hear the Heart Beating As One, and Sparklehorse's It's a Wonderful Life.

Return to the Sea

Hello everyone. It's been quite a while. Remember when I had a blog, then didn't? Well I have news for you. BIG news in fact. Yours truely not only has returned with a new blog, but his own radio show on Denison Unversity's radio station 91.1 WDUB FM. Exciting eh? You're probably thinking though, how does this effect me? Well check this: WDUB ("The Doobie") is available for streaming online, and as my companion to the radio, I have decided to have this blog go with it. (pause for excited gasp) Yes that's right. And the show's name? That's right! From a Basement on the Hill, not only Elliott Smith's last album, but the location of our station! Wowzers! Enough my my faux excitement, here's how this is all gonna go down. This blog will serve as a fourm for me to talk about music and the occasional radom bit of fact for most of the week. Then, when FABOAH goes on air, it will be updated with playlists, artist info, pictures, and perhaps even contests! Does it get any better than this (yes it does). Now for the immdediate information. Since there are but 2 weeks until I go home, FABOAH will not have a set slot. It will however have its inaguaral broadcast on wednesday, May 3 from 7:30-9:30 pm (sorry Lost watchers...). Also, there is the second, semi-annual 24 rockfest Granville Calling: A TBA Benefit Jam on friday May 5 starting at 6pm and going until 6pm the next day. I'll be a co-host along with The Kickback's Pat Hunt, Radio Free Granville's Jon G, and fellow newbie Josh Mankoff. So there you have it. During both, this site will be a buzz. My summer plans are comming, so you have to wait. Well that's a lot for now, and you probably want to get on with your browsing. Keep commin back!
