I kicked off my string of four amazing concerts last night with Joanna Newsom at Little Brother's in Columbus. Walking in and seeing the harp on the stage was enough for me to get excited. She opened with an incredible performance of "Bridges and Ballons" (my favorite of hers) and then brought out her band to play her new album "Ys" in its entirty. The new songs (5, which make up an hour of music) sound terrific, and I highly reccomend the album when it is released. One of the things that surprised me was her voice. If you've ever heard a Joanna Newsom song, you know what I'm talking about. It's like a cat being thrown against a wall. But live, her voice was much softer, and aside from a few squaks, quite beautiful. I've never seen a crowd go that crazy at a folk concert before. She came back out and played "Sadie" before being rushed out the door by her band.
