A Really Great Night of TV

NBC has a really great lineup on Thursdays, and tonight is going to be even better. A 1-hour episode of The Office at 8, followed by Scrubs, and my favorite new comedy of the year, 30 Rock. Now I know that I've been posting a crazy amount of YouTube videos, but they keep the posts entertaining. Here's a clip from 30 Rock.

Nobody's Watching

I'm a huge fan of Bill Lawarance from "Scrubs." He has a new show "Nobody's Watching" that currently seems in limbo for NBC. The pilot is on YouTube, but their website has a bunch of hilarious webisodes. Here's my personal favorite:

Don't Forget: "Boys and Girls in Granville", TONIGHT! 5:30-9:30 at www.wdub.org

Everyone Choose Captain Crunch

I have another reason to love the Wrens. Aside from putting on an amazing show at Little Brothers earlier this year and comming out into the crowd after the show to mingle, I found this on The Rich Girls are Weeping. It's a video of them playing "Everyone Choose Sides"in someone's living room with borrowed guitars and Capin' Crunch for drums. Check it out.

Boys and Girls in Granville

As previously mentioned, my roommates, Jon (above with me) and Josh, and I are doing a big 4 hour 2006 recap show on Wednesday from 5:30-9:30. We decided to name it "Boys and Girls in Granville" after the wonderful Hold Steady album released this year. It should be a great mixture of music, movies, TV, and our commentary on the events of the last year. Be sure to listen at www.wdub.org or in Granville at 91.1 FM!

New Wilco Songs!

I had several people mention during the show how much they enjoyed the new Wilco track I played called "Impossible Germany." Well now, you can preview 12 songs the band has been playing live, including the aforementioned one. You can check out the live version here.

Finals Week Shows and Comments

I will be on the radio twice during finals week. First, I'll have my normal monday night slot (7:30-9:30) as usual. Second, I will be doing a pretty sweet double show with my roommate/Radio Free Granville Host Jon Gardner. For the latter, we'll be recapping 2006 from every angle: music, movies, TV, politics, and I'm sure much more. That show will be Wednesday night, 5:30-9:30. So tune in for the LAST FABOTH of 2006!

ALSO: I realized I was restricting on who could comment on the blog. So now, if you want the 2006 mix, you can actually post in the comment section.

2. The Long Winters - Putting the Days to Bed

I'm No Superman

Yeah I know, I suck at this blogging thing. I had a lot of work recently, so I'll get back to regular posting very very soon. The good news? Scrubs returns tonight! I'm so excited, it's comming on right after my other favorite comedy, The Office, in what will be one of the best hour blocks of my week. To celebrate, here's a clip from last season.

Concert Review: Broken Social Scene

All I can say is wow. I'd seen BSS a few times before (including with the whole band at Lollapalooza) but this show was exceptionally good. Bandmates/openers Do Make Say Think opened up with solid set (imagnine BSS without lyrics). Opening with "Lover's Spit," the band looked like they were set to take over Cleveland. Kevin Drew stopped the set briefly in the middle of "7/4 (Shorelines)" to break up an apparent fight in the audience, saying "That's not what our music is about!" I was a little disappointed that Lisa Lobsinger was there in place of Feist, Amy Milan, or Emily Haines, but she still made "Anthems for a Seventeen Year Old Girl" sound great (Kevin Drew quieted the crowd before hand saying "Let's stop the Bar Mitzvah for a second and pretend we're in an opium den."). One of the highlights for me was having guitarist Jason Collett come out and play one of his solo songs, "I'll Bring the Sun" with the band. They closed with "It's All Gonna Break," but came back to play "KC Accidental" before heading off the stage. A show this great makes me sad they're going on hiatus. I took a video of "Anthems" that I'm attempting to put on YouTube, so I'll get that up hopefully soon.

Ted Leo/RX with Death Cab for Cutie tonight. I'm extremely hyped. As a gift to you, here is a video of DCFC on Halloween as Devo.

Concert Review: Joanna Newsom

I kicked off my string of four amazing concerts last night with Joanna Newsom at Little Brother's in Columbus. Walking in and seeing the harp on the stage was enough for me to get excited. She opened with an incredible performance of "Bridges and Ballons" (my favorite of hers) and then brought out her band to play her new album "Ys" in its entirty. The new songs (5, which make up an hour of music) sound terrific, and I highly reccomend the album when it is released. One of the things that surprised me was her voice. If you've ever heard a Joanna Newsom song, you know what I'm talking about. It's like a cat being thrown against a wall. But live, her voice was much softer, and aside from a few squaks, quite beautiful. I've never seen a crowd go that crazy at a folk concert before. She came back out and played "Sadie" before being rushed out the door by her band.

I Will Write You Love Letters if You Tell Me To

I heard about the Envy Corps about 2 years ago when I got "The Gregory Rumes EP" for free from their website. I started listening to it again, which lead me to purchase their latest EP, "I Will Write You Love Letters if You Tell Me To." I hear a lot of really cool things going on in their music. There's a definate Radiohead/Coldplay influence going on, but they seem to make it their own, which makes their sound unique. I very highly suggest buying the 7 track EP, if only for the tracks "Rhinemadiens" and "Party Dress."
Check out their MySpace page.

Sorry for missing the show Monday. I was at a great performance in Columbus of the Accoustic Africa Tour which featured 3 terrific African artists. I reluctantly went for my world music class and ended up loving it. It was a great way to kick off my amazing string of concerts. Tommorow night is Joanna Newsom, Friday is Broken Social Scene, Monday is Ted Leo/Pharmacists with Death Cab for Cutie, and 10 days later is My Morning Jacket! Phew! Stay tuned for pictures and reviews!

Your Biggest Fan

So over here at FABOTH, I'm a HUGE fan of Voxtrot. Sure, sure, they've been super hyped all over the blogs and what not, but they definately deserve all the press. According to their website, it's going to be a while before their debut lp is ready to go, but in the meantime, tuesday sees the release of their new single "Your Biggest Fan." Featuring three new tracks, it seems quite promising. "Trouble" is one of the tracks that they have up on their website. Thats below, along with a track off of their other two EPs.
Voxtrot - Trouble
Voxtrot - Mothers, Sisters, Daughters & Wives

I'll End Your Week

Spoon has done a song for the soundtrack to the upcomming Will Ferrell film "Stranger Than Fiction." It's called "The Book I Write," and you can stream it here.

My Morning Jacket is releasing a DVD of their terrific live album "Okonokos" on Oct. 31. I saw their epic set this summer at Bonnaroo and will again see them Nov. 15 in Indianapolis for the Rockin' For Riley charity concert. Below is a great clip from the DVD of them playing "Gideon."
My Morning Jacket - Gideon (.mov)

Finally for now, Lollapalooza has inked a deal with Chicago to stay there until 2011. Holler!

Gotta run to class. More later probably.

The latest album by Jason Collett (Broken Social Scene) has been playing non-stop on my iPod all week. It's called "Idols of Exile" and features BSS co-horts and FABOTH favorites like Amy Millan, Emily Haines, Feist, Kevin Drew, James Shaw, and Brendon Canning. He has the album available for streaming on his website here.

The +/- are a band that I heard about a while ago when they were opening for Death Cab. They have a new album comming out, and I've been listening to the first track "Let's Steal The Blueprints" a lot lately. Check it out below.
+/- - Let's Steal the Blueprints

Minnesota Public Radio rocks. Literally. FABOTH favorites The Hold Steady, Dosh, and Amy Millan have all done in-studio performances as of late that are terrific. You can stream them from the links below.

Finally for today, Beirut has a new song from their forthcomming "Lon Gisland" EP.

How's About the Hype?

So the Cold War Kids are a pretty awesome band that have been all over the blogs as of late. I'd be remiss if I were to ignore them. My brother got to meet them after their set at Lollapalooza, so they seem like cool guys. Here is a Mp3 to try on for size.

One of my favorite blogs rbally is closing up. Check out their last four posts this week.

I recently discovered the music of Martin Dosh. A friend of mine is a huge Anticon records fan and I subsequently got into his album "Pure Trash" and now his latest album, "The Lost Take." He released a bonus track for the later that's really worth checking out.
Dosh - A Ghosts Business

I'm a huge fan of Death Cab for Cutie and Ben Gibbard. He did a terrific cover of Cindi Lauper's "Girl's Just Wanna Have Fun." I HIGHLY reccomend you check this out.
Ben Gibbard - Girl's Just Wanna Have Fun

That's all I have for now. Keep on listening to the show!

New Jenny Lewis

Jenny Lewis and the Watson Twins played a new song called "Fernando" on Conan a few days back. It's a great song and Jenny Lewis is quite attractive. I have the YouTube clip and the MP3. Enjoy!

She Sends Kisses

On Friday night, the Wrens rocked out at Little Brothers in Columbus. This is easily one of the best shows I've ever seen. They had a ton of energy and the crowd fed on that and had just as much. They played a lot off "The Meadowlands" including "This Boy is Exhausted," "Everyone Choose Sides," "Hopeless," "Happy," crowd favorite "Boys You Won't" and closed with the beautiful "She Sends Kisses." The coolest part of their interaction after the show, when they came into the crowd, shaking hands and signing autographs for all who asked. This really reinforced my belief that they're one of the better bands out there.

--> I'm seeing Broken Social Scene in November in Cleveland. They have a new music video for "Major Label Debut (Fast)" which is a collage of footage from various tours, including a clip from their performance at the 2005 Intonation Festival. You can get that here.

-->I'll post more later when I have more time, but don't forget to listen to the show tonight from 7:30-9:30...www.wdub.org

Returns and Haunted Places and Wrens and Reviews and Boys and Girls in America

Tonight, I'm seeing the Wrens at Little Brother's in Columbs. The picture above is from when I saw them at the 2005 Intonation Festival. I'll have a review and pictures hopefully by Monday at the latest.

My friends and I have (illegally) been several times to this abandoned mental institute in Indy called Central State. There is now a documentary about it. Check it out here. I've decided to start a new feature on this site, where I do capsule reviews of albums, old and new. Here is the first one:

The Hold Steady - Boys and Girls in America
The Hold Steady grabbed my attention with the song "You're Little Hoodrat Friend" on 2004's "Separation Sunday" and I never looked back. After seeing them at the 2005 Intonation Festival and Lollapalooza this past summer, I knew the Hold Steady were ready to take the indie music scene and make it make them a sandwhich. From the first notes, this album feels like what Bruce Springsteen and the E-Street Band would have made if they met a year ago. Craig Finn's stories of one night stands, getting high and betting on horses make "Boys and Girls in America" one of my favorite albums of this year. The standout track is the single, "Chips Ahoy!" where Finn begs "How I'm gonna know if you're high if you won't let me touch you?" while the band barrels through what sounds like Springsteen on steroids. Also reccomended: "Stuck Between Stations", "Massive Nights"
Stream the Album Here

Thanks to everyone who continues to listen to the show. Remember, Monday nights, 7:30-9:30 at www.wdub.org

It's Summertime

Hey folks, I don't know how many people read this, but I just thought I'd give a nice little pre-Bonnaroo summer time post. Today I checked out Luna Music's Sidewalk sale and got some great stuff, each for a dollar. I found albums by Arco, Jim Guthrie, Skating Club, Andrew Morgan, Living Things, Colin Clary and the Magogs, The Sun, and Built By Alaska all for a dollar a peice. Making things even better, I found singles for Athlete's "Half Light" and the Rock N Roll Soldiers "Anthem" (edited so I can play it on the show) and a World Leader Pretend EP. The two jems of the buy however were easily the soundtrack to the "Aristocrats" which has Gilbert Godfried, Sarah Silverman and Bob Saget (all three the best in the film) and a disc which I originally thought was a Bright Eyes single, but turned out to be "I'm Wide Awake It's Morning." All for a dollar! How wonderful! Other albums I've been groovin' to in the early part of the summer here have been (with my review):
-Gnarls Barkley- "St. Elsewhere" (5 stars)
-The Streets- "The Hardest Way to Make an Easy Living" (3.5 stars)
-The Walkmen- "A Hundred Miles Off" (4 stars)
-The Raconteurs- "Broken Boy Soldiers" (4 stars)
-Josh Ritter- "The Animal Years" (3 stars)
-Beirut- "Gulag Orkestar" (4 stars)

I'll have more to post after Bonnaroo, including word on new Radiohead tracks...

A Litte PR Never Hurt Nobody

For those of you at Denison, come TONIGHT to see Burpee's Seedy Theatrical Company's Out with the Old, In with the New show at 9PM in Slayter Auditorium. It'll be hilarious! Also, keep an eye out for press on Granville Calling (those are promo pics above). There is now a Facebook group and event. It's gonna be a really great show, hopefully with prizes (like pizza) and tons of games, and of course, great music. Remember, that is on Friday, May 5-Saturday May 6 from 6pm to 6pm. In a more random note, I highly recomend Islands' Return to the Sea, Yo La Tengo's amazing album I Can Hear the Heart Beating As One, and Sparklehorse's It's a Wonderful Life.

Return to the Sea

Hello everyone. It's been quite a while. Remember when I had a blog, then didn't? Well I have news for you. BIG news in fact. Yours truely not only has returned with a new blog, but his own radio show on Denison Unversity's radio station 91.1 WDUB FM. Exciting eh? You're probably thinking though, how does this effect me? Well check this: WDUB ("The Doobie") is available for streaming online, and as my companion to the radio, I have decided to have this blog go with it. (pause for excited gasp) Yes that's right. And the show's name? That's right! From a Basement on the Hill, not only Elliott Smith's last album, but the location of our station! Wowzers! Enough my my faux excitement, here's how this is all gonna go down. This blog will serve as a fourm for me to talk about music and the occasional radom bit of fact for most of the week. Then, when FABOAH goes on air, it will be updated with playlists, artist info, pictures, and perhaps even contests! Does it get any better than this (yes it does). Now for the immdediate information. Since there are but 2 weeks until I go home, FABOAH will not have a set slot. It will however have its inaguaral broadcast on wednesday, May 3 from 7:30-9:30 pm (sorry Lost watchers...). Also, there is the second, semi-annual 24 rockfest Granville Calling: A TBA Benefit Jam on friday May 5 starting at 6pm and going until 6pm the next day. I'll be a co-host along with The Kickback's Pat Hunt, Radio Free Granville's Jon G, and fellow newbie Josh Mankoff. So there you have it. During both, this site will be a buzz. My summer plans are comming, so you have to wait. Well that's a lot for now, and you probably want to get on with your browsing. Keep commin back!
